Halloween, also known as "All Hallows’ Eve," is a holiday celebrated annually on October 31st. Halloween is massively popular in the United States. However, Halloween originated in Europe and is celebrated today in countries all over the world.
Halloween is one of the world's oldest holidays. Most scholars believe that the roots of Halloween extend back to a 2000-year-old Celtic celebration known as Samhaim in which people living in what is now Ireland would light fires and celebrate the recent harvest on or around October 31.
The Celts also believed that the barrier between the physical world and the spirit world was easily breached during this time, enabling the dead to return to the Earth. In observance of this belief, celebrants would often try to communicate with the souls of passed loved ones, leave food out for spiritual visitors, and dress in costumes to scare off any fairies that might wish to kidnap them. During the Middle Ages, the practice of carving Jack O'Lanterns —which were originally turnips, not pumpkins— became another Samhain tradition.
At I.E.S. Salvador Serrano, we also celebrated Halloween with different activities. The different non linguistic areas worked on the festivity. Students learnt about the festivity in Geography about how is Halloween celebrated in the world. In the English class, they also worked with famous writers about horror stories. In Art the students created graves of celebrities.

Halloween, también conocido como "All Hallows’ Eve," es una festividad que se celebra todos los años el 31 de octubre. Halloween es tremendamente popular en los Estados Unidos. No obstante, Halloween se origino en Europa y se celebra hoy en países de todo el mundo.
Halloween es uno de las festividades más antiguas. La mayoría de los eruditos creen que las raíces de Halloween se remontan a una celebración celta de hace 2000 años conocida como Samhaim, en la que la gente que habitaba lo que hoy es Irlanda encendía fogatas y celebraba la cosecha reciente alrededor del 31 de octubre o ese mismo día.
Los celtas también creían que la barrera entre el mundo físico y el espiritual se rompía fácilmente durante esa época, permitiendo que los muertos regresaran a la tierra. En la práctica de esta creencia, los que lo celebraban a menudo intentaban comunicarse con las almas de antiguos amores fallecidos, dejaban comida fuera para los espíritus visitantes y se vestían con disfraces para ahuyentar a cualquier hada que quisiera secuestrarlos. Durante la Edad Media, la práctica de tallar calabazas –que originariamente eran nabos- se convirtió en otra tradición de Samhaim.
En el I.E.S. Salvador Serrano también celebramos Halloween con diferentes actividades. Las distintas ANL trabajaron la festividad. El alumnado aprendió sobre cómo es Halloween celebrado en otras partes del mundo en Historia. En la clase de Inglés también trabajaron con autores de obras de terror . Y en clase de arte los alumnos hicieron lápidas sobre personajes ilustres.
